Left something at a hotel? Here is exactly what to do

You are home, unpacking, and then it hits you: the charger is still plugged in next to the bed in room 412. The good news is that hotels find and keep forgotten items every day. What decides whether you get yours back is how quickly and how clearly you ask.

The 6 steps

1. Act today

Rooms are cleaned and turned around within hours, and items are logged by housekeeping at that moment. The longer you wait, the more likely your item has been moved, stored away from the front desk, or mixed in with other things. Even if you are not sure you left it there, ask now.

2. Contact the hotel the right way

Send an email and follow up with a phone call. Ask for the lost and found, the front desk or housekeeping. Email gives you a written record and lets the team forward your message to whoever holds the items. A call is faster when you are in a hurry.

Always include:

  • Your full name and the dates of your stay
  • Your room number and booking reference
  • A precise description of the item (see the next step)
  • Your email address and phone number, with the country code

3. Describe the item so it can be matched

"A black phone" matches dozens of items. Give the brand and model, the colour, any case or cover, scratches, stickers, and where you think you left it (nightstand, bathroom, safe, a drawer). For a phone, mention the lock screen picture. For clothing, the brand, size and colour. A photo of a similar item helps.

4. Ask about their policy

Before you agree to anything, ask three things: how long they keep items, whether they will ship, and what proof of ownership they need. Expect to be asked for a description that only the owner would know, and for ID when you collect in person.

5. Decide how it gets back to you

You have three options:

  • Pick it up yourself or ask someone nearby to collect it. Cheapest, but only if you are close by.
  • Ask the hotel to ship it. Some hotels do, usually at your cost, and international shipments can take extra effort on their side.
  • Use a shipping service. With SpeedPorter you find your hotel, add the item, see the price and pay online. DHL Express collects the parcel from the hotel front desk, and the hotel receives the shipping label by email, so the staff only have to hand it over.

6. Plan for customs, batteries and fragile items

If the item crosses a border, the parcel needs a customs document. A forgotten personal belonging has no commercial value, and it should be described that way. SpeedPorter prepares this paperwork for you. A few more things to know:

  • Items with batteries such as phones, laptops and power banks have carrier rules. If you are unsure, ask before you book.
  • Valuable items are worth insuring. Add insurance when the item would be expensive or impossible to replace.
  • Passports and ID cards are a special case. Contact your embassy or consulate first; they can tell you the safest way to replace or recover them.

Common questions

How long do hotels keep lost items?

It depends on the hotel. Many keep items for a few weeks up to a few months, and valuables are often kept longer. Ask for their policy when you get in touch, and do not wait: the sooner you ask, the easier it is to find your item.

Will the hotel ship my item to me?

Some will, many prefer not to. Shipping abroad means paperwork, packaging and a courier booking, so hotels often ask guests to arrange it. With SpeedPorter the hotel only hands over the parcel: you order online and DHL Express collects it from the front desk.

Who pays for shipping a forgotten item?

Usually the guest. The price depends on where the item is going and how much it weighs. On SpeedPorter you see the price before you pay.

How long does it take to get my item back?

Once the item is collected from the hotel, delivery with DHL Express typically takes 2 to 3 working days, depending on the destination.

What if my hotel is not on SpeedPorter?

Search for it in the order form first. If you cannot find it, write to [email protected] with the name of the hotel and we will tell you whether we can collect from it.
